New York Vacation Rentals are the trend for 2016! The advantages of staying at a NY vacation rental are numerous. There are lots of pet friendly options, homes with fireplaces and fire pits, chalets and cottages right next to the lake. You have private parking and sometimes piers for your boat. Vacation rentals give families room to spread out and enjoy each other. Something a hotel just can’t offer.
The time to book our summer 2016 vacation rental is here! What do you need to do before you book your vacation rental? Here are some tips:
- Inquire about your vacation rental with the actual owner or manager before you book. They know the property (and the area) best and will have you living like a local on Day 1.
- If you are looking to bring your pet, be sure you know the Pet Policy. Some will not allow certain breeds or sizes of dogs. It might also be good to check out if there is a kennel or fenced in area for your pet while you’re out at the lake. Compare vacation rentals with a pet policy versus kenneling them near your home if your on tighter budget.
- Know the cleaning policy. Some rental owners or managers charge a cleaning fee and don’t expect much cleaning. There others who expect to have the place ready for the next renters. Whatever the case may be, it’s always wise to take pictures or note any possible previous damage. Be very thorough.
- Picking up the keys. Some rentals may have a lock box on the door. Some owners might meet you at the property or have them hidden somewhere. Property Managers might have you stop at their office and pick up the keys. Know before you go!
- Ask about mobile phone reception. Vacation rentals in New York can be remote. If you need use your cell phone for directions, or to check in, make sure you will have cell coverage. We recommend you have a physical map in the vehicle just in case. If you have to stay connected, ask about Wi-Fi availability.
- Always ask about supplies and what you should bring. Some supply bed sheets but not towels, or vice versa. Some supply both. Always ask about a medical kit or if you need to bring certain kitchen items that you can’t live without (like a bottle opener) or a muffin pan. You get the idea. Some cabins and cottages offer canoes, kayaks or bikes on site.
- Check out a calendar of events or a town’s Facebook page to research area events. Keep in mind that rental prices are often higher during summer, holiday’s, and big events.
- Ask who you need to contact if you have any emergencies. If there is a leaky faucet or a light goes out, you will know whom to contact.

As the summer days start to shorten, we all begin to start thinking ahead to the fall. No fall season can be complete without going on a fall color tour in New York. Upstate New York peaks and dips though the mountains and valleys but that is just part of the fantastic show Mother Nature puts on for us. The robust reds to the golden hues of yellows and oranges, fall color is what it is all about in October. Here are our favorite three areas for fall color:
Finger Lakes Region: This region is known for many things such as boating and wines that can rival the best of the world. This breathtaking landscape is intriguing and tugs the string of the fall lover’s hearts. Travel along Seneca Lake into Watkins Glen for the wineries, the beautiful and majestic Watkins Glen State Park (this is a must see if going in the fall), and views from the lake. The shades of golds and reds cast a refreshing color against a blue backdrop. Be sure to map out your wine tours, U pick farms and pumpkin patches for a real fall experience. Finger Lakes Vacation Rentals
Lake Placid: For a slightly more thrilling adventure, experience Whiteface Mountain near Lake Placid. Drive the Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway to the top of New York’s 5th highest peak for an incredible view of the Adirondacks from the best vantage point. View the Panoramic views of the park, tour the castle, ride a gondola and enjoy many things to do on Whiteface Mountain. To make your fall getaway an experience you won’t forget, pack the car and rent a cabin in Lake Placid. Be sure to check out the Flaming Leaves Festival in October. Lake Placid Vacation Rentals
Tupper Lake: This area has many different elevations creating an ever changing topography. Between the valleys, mountains and rivers, the hardwoods change and bust with bountiful colors beginning in late September. Be sure to check out the Ausable Chasm, the oldest natural landmark in the US. Canoe or kayak between gorges, cliffs, waterfalls and forestry. Other recreational opportunities are abound that are adventurous and relaxing. To round out your Tupper Lake vacation, rent a cabin here. Tupper Lake Vacation Rentals

Most property rental rates are similar to hotels, but you get lots of extra amenities when renting cabins and cottages. Many factors drive price: where and how long you want to rent, the number of bedrooms and capacity, lakefront VS off water, and whether you bring a dog. If you are fortunate to experience a lakefront vacation, expect the dock, rowboat (or) canoe, firepit, deck and outdoor grill to be included. Rental owners do a great job to make you vacation memorable. So memorable in fact, that you’ll make the cottage-getaway an annual event.
